Geoffrey Hinton, often referred to as the “Godfather of AI,” has warned that there is a 10% to 20% chance that artificial intelligence (AI) could lead to the extinction of humanity within the next three decades.
Mass Unemployment and Social Unrest
As tech giants like Google and OpenAI continue developing increasingly advanced AI systems, many experts caution about the potentially dark future ahead. According to numerous reports and analyses from leading global experts, the next decade could bring dramatic changes to life as we know it.
Experts estimate that AI could replace a significant portion of the workforce by 2030. Occupations such as drivers, administrative staff, and even certain medical professions are at high risk. This massive automation could lead to unprecedented unemployment and, consequently, severe social unrest.
Constant Surveillance Everywhere
The development of AI-powered facial and behavioral recognition systems will enable almost complete surveillance of citizens. Experts warn that by 2030, it will be possible to predict political preferences, sexual orientations, and health issues solely based on digital footprints.
Data Manipulation
AI will create highly convincing fake videos and audio materials, opening the door to mass manipulation and misinformation. This technology could influence elections and destabilize democratic systems, as already seen in several cases.
Autonomous Weapons and New Forms of Warfare
A particularly concerning area for some experts is the development of autonomous weapons. Predictions suggest that by 2030, fully autonomous drones and robotic systems capable of making independent attack decisions may exist. This raises unprecedented moral and ethical questions in the history of warfare.
Potential Loss of Control Over AI Systems
Leading AI experts warn that superintelligent systems could escape human control. Although scenarios similar to the movie “Terminator” are unlikely, concerns remain that AI systems might start making decisions that humans cannot predict or understand.
Impact on Mental Health
Increasing reliance on AI systems will lead to new psychological challenges. Experts warn about the potential for mass depression, anxiety, and social isolation due to reduced human interactions.
Experts’ Warnings
Geoffrey Hinton recently spoke about the dangers of AI, highlighting that the development pace of technology is “much faster” than anyone anticipated, as reported by The Guardian. He added that humanity has never faced something more intelligent than itself. Hinton noted: “How many examples do you know of a less intelligent being controlling a more intelligent one? Very few. The relationship between a mother and child is an example, but it is almost unique.”
He compared human intelligence levels to potential future AI systems: “Imagine yourself and a three-year-old child. We will be the toddlers,” he warned.
Hinton is one of three scientists who received the Turing Award, the equivalent of a Nobel Prize in computer science. However, another member of this trio, Yann LeCun, chief AI scientist at Meta, downplayed the dangers of AI, stating that artificial intelligence “could save humanity from extinction.”
