Unfounded Fear and Lack of True Intelligence in LLMs
The fear is that as models grow larger and more complex, they could solve new problems that we currently cannot predict. This concern suggests that larger models might gain dangerous abilities, such as thinking and planning. “Our study shows that the fear of an LLM model breaking free and doing something completely unexpected, innovative, and potentially dangerous is unfounded,” says Tayyar Madabushi. Controlling the Learning Process of AI Models
Scientists recently explored the idea of “emergent abilities” in LLM models, referring to skills that could develop independently of their programming. However, the study’s experiments with four different LLMs found no evidence of such autonomous behavior. The abilities they observed resulted from the models’ capacity to follow instructions, remember information, and use linguistic skills. There were no signs of independent or unforeseen actions.
