The most serious rival to Google Search is definitely SearchGPT, a part of ChatGPT, which is expected to be launched by the end of this year, introducing a new generation of OpenAI chatbots. According to Press Gazette, Varun Shetty, the head of media at OpenAI, announced at a conference in Brussels that the company plans to launch SearchGPT by the “end of the year.”
SearchGPT is an AI search engine that will allow users to quickly get answers to queries without clicking on other websites. For example, you can ask questions like “Did the L.A. Lakers win against Boston last night? If so, who scored the points?” and get a complete overview of the results.
However, SearchGPT is still in the testing phase, and performance reports have not been great so far. In September, The Washington Post published an article with impressions of the search engine, concluding that OpenAI’s rival still has a lot of work to do.
A spokesperson for OpenAI confirmed that we will be able to try SearchGPT before the end of the current year, suggesting that OpenAI has managed to improve its product to the level of competitors like Perplexity and Arc Search.
Battle of Internet Search Engines
The launch of OpenAI’s search engine could be a turning point in the development of AI technology and the fight for search engine dominance. For decades, Google has been unrivaled, but if any AI product can challenge its dominance, it would likely be one developed by OpenAI.
Compared to traditional search engines, SearchGPT answers queries using natural language and cites its sources, allowing users to quickly access complete articles. “This is the core experience we are building, and here you can see the balance we are trying to establish between users and sources,” said Shetty.
Currently, if you ask ChatGPT for an answer, you get it without citing sources. The arrival of SearchGPT could satisfy AI skeptics who want to read and consume original content, not just summaries generated by artificial intelligence. The experience of using AI for quick internet searches with Arc Search has been fantastic, but OpenAI’s entry into this space could be revolutionary. Time will tell if SearchGPT can seriously challenge Google and become the No. 1 search engine in the new era of the internet.
