Photomath, a Croatian app for solving math problems, stands out as one of the most popular AI apps, competing directly with ChatGPT. Recently, the app earned a spot on the list of top 100 generative AI applications published by American venture capital firm Andreessen Horowitz. Photomath ranked third among the fifty best GenAI mobile apps by the number of monthly active users. This is the second time it has achieved this ranking this year. Only ChatGPT and Microsoft Edge ranked higher, placing Photomath among the most widely used AI-based applications. It even surpassed Microsoft’s Bing and Copilot in user engagement.
As expected, ChatGPT secured the top position on the list of the 50 best AI applications by unique monthly visits. Character.ai and Perplexity followed closely. Andreessen Horowitz tracks unique monthly visits and monthly active users, releasing data on the most used AI applications every six months. The AI market changes rapidly, and this is evident by the fact that 30% of the companies on the new list are new compared to the previous report in March 2024. ChatGPT has maintained its top spot for the third time, but competition continues to grow.
Photomath’s Success in the EdTech Category
Photomath also appeared on the list of top GenAI apps by monthly active users in March 2024 when the first report was released. The EdTech category, which includes Photomath, relies on smartphone cameras to solve math tasks. This category was particularly popular, with only six other apps making it to the list.
Most mobile AI apps have not secured external funding. However, four of the seven ranked EdTech apps, including Photomath, raised over $30 million, according to PitchBook data. Google acquired the Croatian company behind Photomath last year. Although the acquisition amount remains undisclosed, unofficial estimates suggest it could be around $500 million. This acquisition is considered the largest of a Croatian company to date.
